We try 17 brands of sardines in doses, which you will probably find in your local supermarket or online. To find the best, we tried each without knowing which brand was. Our winner is Patagonia Commission Sardines in olive oil, But we also crowned four runners -up.

In order to find the best sardines in cans, our editors have tried 17 different brands, which you will probably find in your local grocery store or online. We stopped sardines that were immersed in olive oil, although some brands had natural smoke as an ingredient. We opened every can, put the fillets in shells and then tried them in a random order without knowing which brand was. After we had wrapped ourselves through many, many sardines, we tabulared the results and crowned an overall winner and four worthy candidates that we would like to eat if we would like a quick, delicious and protein -rich meal.

The criteria

Large sardines in cans should be tender, meaty and juicy. You should be well seasoned: Although a hint of salt is welcome, it shouldn’t taste like the ocean. Each sardine fillet should keep its shape and leaves into beautiful, considerable pieces (do not convert into Mush). Since the quality of the fish and the olive oil influences the overall taste of the canned fishing, the sardines and oil used should be of high quality. The oil should not taste rancid, bitter or sour, and the sardines should be pleasantly fishing, but not excessively.

Patagonia confirms sardines in olive oil

These sardines in cans were the overwhelming favorite. “Delicious, slightly smoky. No complaints,” wrote our editorial director. Danielwhich gave top brands for taste and texture. Our associated culinary publisher, Thermaliawas equally enthusiastic about them and enjoyed the assertive, fishy flavors and the persistent smoky finish. She called out: “Love them so much!” Both our Associate Visuals Director, Amandaand our senior editor, GeneviaveCalled the taste of these as “beautiful”, which is high praise in our taste test world. Meanwhile our associated editorial director, MeganWhoever accidentally ordered two cases of sardines, but they all managed to eat (and enjoy) them all, said this would be their new contact point. Although our editors did not enjoy these sardines in doses as much as our winner, they still thought that the four sardines mentioned above were very good and they are happy to eat them themselves or to serve them with bread and crudités at a dinner party.

Everyone praised the taste of Ati Manale Sardines in olive oilWhich was nice and heartily and particularly hearty. However, the texture divided some of our editors. Laila enjoyed the “butter -like” texture of the sardines, and Genevievieve thought they were tender and scaly. However, Daniel and Amanda thought they seemed to be too dry.

We enjoyed many of the sardines we tried in cans, especially those Olive oil outdoor virgin. Many sardines are sold with intact skin and bones, since the high pressure and the warmth of the canned process soften the bones, which makes them easy to chew. While the bones do not necessarily change the taste of the end product, they can add a slight roughness that some people do not like. (Our editors have nothing to do personally.) Our overall winner from Patagonia and all four runners -up use sardines packed bones and skin.

Our editors found that small, young sardines were usually more delicate, while large fillets – which come from mature fish – are too dry for our taste. Surprisingly, the most expensive doses we tried –Ati Manale Sardines in olive oil and Jose gourmet sardines in olive oil outside of viricalfell into this category. Both were delicious, but somewhat drier than the other competitors. If dryness is a problem, we recommend adding a splash to an extraviregated olive oil from the can or a bottle for additional moisture and wealth.

Our test methodology

All taste tests are carried out with brands that are completely hidden and without discussion. Tasted tastes of samples in random order.
