“Everyone in my generation and about it was failed by sex education.” Sex educator Ruby rarely on sexy salads and srilankic curries
A festival of taste and feeling
Ruby’s approach to cooking is as free spirit as her attitude to life: “I am a chaotic ingredient cook”, she laughs while throwing carrots into a Miso-Maple glaze and preparing a powerful dressing from Satsuma, Lime Gazette, Ginger and Sesame Oil. The kitchen fills with scents that are sweet, spicy and earthy.
“I just want to have powerful flavors and a bit of fun,” says Ruby, her hands are confident between patties and the nutribullet. “Sexy salads are the easiest thing in summer: only vegetables, then a glug rice vinegar and a similar shit with soy sauce, and you’re done.”
There is no excitement about oven temperatures or a perfect technique. Instead, it is about freedom to play, improvise others and invite them to the process. “I love to find ways to give me permission to make life easier for me,” Ruby admits, as she shares the secret of her approach: “It doesn’t have to be an astronomical thing. We eat for lunch, we all have to chat.”
From sex education to salad servers
While the salad comes together – a turmoil of rockets, green beans, cucumbers and these wonderfully caramelized carrots – Ruby’s work is transformed. She started her career with young people sex and relationships, but soon adults recognized as hungry for honest, sham -free discussions.
“Everyone in my generation and about it was failed by sex education and gave way into the world completely unsuspectingly,” says Ruby. “I worked with adults because I realized that they had the same questions that the 14-year-old asked me.”
Ruby’s identity as a strange person informs her work and worldview. For them, queerness is both a personal orientation and a political invitation to question the scripts, society gives us love, sex and relationships. “Inquiries is an invitation to get all of this and go. Why do we have to do it? Can we do it differently? Can we do it in a way that is more specific for our own wishes or our lives?”
A foretaste of inheritance and at home
The food for Ruby is deeply connected to cultural heritage and family. She is a mixed race – Sri Lanka and British – and speaks warmly how cooking from Srilankische Curry with her mother is a way to connect with her roots. “Eating is a nice way for me to contact the Srilankic part of my heritage,” she says, and remembers childhood meals that were shaped by the celiac disease diagnosis of her siblings and the inventive dishes on a rice base that was filled with their house in London.
Now in Margate, Ruby continues to find comfort and creativity in the kitchen, often cooks with her siblings and divides the load into so -called “cooperation in cooperation” – half an idea, which leads to something unexpectedly delicious.
Radical honesty, true pleasure
Ruby’s radicalism is not just about relationships – it is about living authentically, using imperfection and delighting everyday life. She is open to her non -monogamous lifestyle, the reluctance to bow to social expectations in terms of marriage or children, and the conviction that chaos and disorder are not only inevitable, but liberating.
“We spend so much of our lives to strive for fictional perfection. Actually, it invites a little more chaos into our lives and admit that life is naturally chaotic can really free us,” says Ruby.
The joy of playing
While the lunch is served – carrots are still browsing, beans are still bright and the dressing with citrus fruits and chilli – Ruby reflects the importance of the game not only in childhood, but throughout life. Collecting Polly bags is more than nostalgia; It is about gaining joy back and giving yourself permission, having fun.
“What if the game is an essential, inherent part of the existence?” She ponderes. “Due to pleasure, sex and exploration, there is so little space for adults to really have fun and play. We are only taught not to prioritize a good time.”
This sets the table, the salad is “sexy” and the conversation – like the food – is honest, nutritious and absolutely satisfactory.
