Growing edible landscapes to build up community and bring joy
I have been involved in initiatives for food growth initiatives in Birmingham for more than 20 years. Fruit & Nut Village was compiled in 2018 as a collaboration of two projects. Our goal is to develop a number of networks in the based neighborhood of multi -year foods all over the city. We build up community by working together and spreading practical skills when volunteers, pomp, mulch and weeds plant.
We now have more than 50 locations – established and newly created orchards, some of which are planted with historical fruit varieties. Nut goods; Forest gardens – in Stirchley, Druid Heath and Balsall Heath. With a new phase of lottery financing this year, we have taken four people in constant positions and hope to extend to two more parts of the city. Our work deals with the climate change trees in a far-reaching way in their tissues and also in the ground. We have fantastic local and national partners, including an incredible surplus for the waste food project, which has given us space to work and shares resources. Too many urban spaces are missing trees. Ten of our longest -established trees produce 10,000 apples between them. Imagine the yield if there was a fruit tree for everyone in Birmingham! People feel connected to each other and with the local open rooms when we work together, and we bring people together from different communities and even new migrants from all over the world.
In some parts of Birmingham, people are generally negative about where they live. It would be good that people feel positively in their areas and imagine the legacy that they leave what they will do when they plant trees.
Why food is growing based on the neighborhood is so fruitful
- It is powerful to learn from doing. Volunteers from Fruit & Nut Village come together to share their knowledge and profit from the knowledge of other people. Planting trees and care for you leaves a legacy for the coming generations and is also a great boost for your mental and physical health.
- We urge ourselves to market modern life. People can get involved at every level – they could stop to see what’s going on and talk to the dog while walking. We organize Community events three times a year: Halloween, a Wasail in January and storytelling at Summer Solstice.
- We need more politicians to discuss and normalize the potential for the growth of regenerative foods and natural activities. Bristol and parts of London give amazing examples – it feels like Birmingham is just catching up.
